! }$ ~1 a( v" I* \: p- F" C2 wIt's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in
, w- {; y6 V8 R! D: S# znumbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and + Z; }/ F3 D5 Z0 l& `9 \/ f7 e0 g
four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed
0 H0 v5 o" V& _' Q4 S1 Rthat this time must be different, that their voices could be that
$ W7 F: c0 e  A" E' [/ s' jdifference.1 A2 a- A7 j7 B/ L

. u- f7 C! m* i0 e  {5 u  aIt's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and
0 Z5 L, f7 K$ d* g& }Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight,
# u5 z8 X* p* ~8 Fdisabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that
8 |: o$ t% B, O" f6 b: s2 Gwe have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red 5 t& U  j8 I+ D5 l5 q, K0 X
states and blue states.
! S0 e6 @8 y; n6 C/ Y
: g7 L+ r" b0 X0 X2 Q3 nWe are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to + S  E3 V( b* v' G; M' f3 v. Y5 d
be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their 0 i! W6 Y$ b  P) a, B2 N& x
hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this
1 M- j% g+ O- C! vdate in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious . S; ?# x  u+ J2 G. |5 v6 o
call from Sen. McCain.

& r; M) G2 C2 JSen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even

the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've

of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms 7 Q, Z0 |9 V7 N! Y9 p2 q
of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men
6 u" O  w( |% M8 T, J8 nand women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and # h  j+ M* \  r2 d5 N; g. P
$20 to the cause.5 Q4 }% N" Z/ Y6 p% k

1 x- T- ?5 w$ ?3 r( {1 a% X. ~It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their " x0 M/ r# e8 n/ G8 R$ ~# |0 G
generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that - L1 C0 ?* B- [3 r
offered little pay and less sleep.

+ ?, ]/ ^; Z+ G% \8 \# ], \It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold
" G5 u! P1 S- r1 I$ C  Z$ s4 e: `- Qand scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the
' I: ^: ^8 T- h% G/ Q; C3 C+ ~. hmillions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more

And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you

bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the ' n# W5 A2 Z& w. b, \
worst financial crisis in a century.5 [: \& v$ F4 H
0 n3 G1 w( y5 v! J" n& r7 U
Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up 3 R1 p& F. c% G& Q2 N
in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives

4 k( g$ e( D* qThere are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall
" I0 O- k: x" d  D; u# e9 Xasleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills
- T+ j  ]6 ~/ Z- e! F3 `0 \& x1 Xor save enough for their child's college education.- g& q7 x' D9 s! R

/ g: B) H# g  W$ W5 yThere's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to
, e9 ]) \/ x4 d4 }build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.
* ]+ q; m0 I: E% T6 \$ t2 c
* T7 G: y% |9 v7 [- {* }' U# s/ ^4 RThe road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there
# M* G7 V' k5 t+ _: w+ Bin one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more , F1 h8 I! `& F  R% C
hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

% s; g1 Y! X0 z+ B! I6 EThere will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree : g, d7 y1 j9 C) e9 T' ~1 i
with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the ' a# A/ B" k1 j
government can't solve every problem.2 q0 T: C* m- q" m
/ ~9 P4 s0 p0 ], p/ o
But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will
; B" |1 f" n1 w5 V/ C$ D7 `listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you
! i, x9 ^( N7 ~" d8 a' ]to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in
0 b* ^! q' B( @0 {1 E' u- DAmerica for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by
* R: y+ M2 X8 }* N8 Y. Ncalloused hand.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn

: P( R& ^  t! }! F# K7 {% z% uThis victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us
# c1 R$ [3 ?9 P5 Q1 S, vto make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things $ F+ M! z3 `* k( N* Q' a
were.- ]: p5 X( ]2 u9 `

. f* c  |; M1 W. n) H: C1 k) eIt can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit
0 K1 w! ^. c0 D- m: Hof sacrifice.; A7 ^1 e; _. J) g5 O1 w, r

. C& C. _7 C7 E% q  GSo let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each   T. h6 @. K9 M  @' D
of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only $ z  C  U1 B: N2 }5 e
ourselves but each other.$ `1 c- K( o5 J' x. ?2 B

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's 0 A" f* h1 z% L3 G: `
that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.
! i. G% k1 ~9 U# B5 y, X% v' \6 ], i" o. D+ q' B- o3 J
In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist
+ R- s2 r; T) h1 G3 Wthe temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and
) Q' [# P0 z3 d7 q) ]% {$ Ximmaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.* G0 U7 d2 v5 a4 c
) i) M+ p! {7 h1 i+ A4 ]2 s  {
Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
1 j) l0 o! i1 c' a: E( ~& Abanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the 6 e3 H* [" O0 V
values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.' V! ?) A0 L/ O& o; J* x; O3 j6 f
. Q9 C( s! J- i% l
Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won
8 z& z' u. _4 L7 s6 [a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and 4 ^* h' ~; C1 d% |  _9 |$ q% _
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.
4 ]/ ^/ f; J9 x' W2 Z4 I% ^6 N! I  Z  @
As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies
- S* w+ p4 j  M. p: s/ R: wbut friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds $ U' m: s, ?2 m2 O# |2 [& w
of affection.
; a9 _) h1 N/ _- q  j1 h% u. B8 L- d$ M$ c
And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won 8 F5 G2 ^# \) [  {; C( B
your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be
0 }! ^: u' n5 M" U2 J0 L) @your president, too.
# k5 F  i6 I5 ?6 a7 ~! T. V8 |) k9 j- N% g3 x* \' q$ A/ z1 q
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments
3 A! A+ l6 ^: j" E" N# Tand palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten
" J1 W' z( q; `2 r1 ^- r, {5 scorners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared,

& Z( Y* ~! m3 fTo those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To - G6 i8 ~) R. F4 g) V) L
those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who
* n2 C; T3 Q# R" Mhave wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved % f# t2 }0 C6 f
once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of 3 v- F' L* C1 ~5 @  j
our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our
6 |8 j" [, u) L- N5 ]! Jideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.! [& e4 g- o  ]

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can

' I$ k) i5 y) [This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for
: G9 L+ q5 P; p8 ?' t3 T/ Rgenerations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her
# ^2 n+ ]) b% M9 z* gballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in
9 U2 \9 b( W) Z/ a# ^& dline to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann
3 `. [* z+ X# k# x, ~4 ^! h( uNixon Cooper is 106 years old.- D/ H* S+ Z4 i  |2 L- F

! G0 s" o! b) q+ _She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars
4 \# Z4 g' E& `4 s5 W) h) |' P" z- ~on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for ( K4 s2 y# X2 G% e
two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
9 G7 B9 o% |# z; q5 A6 x- b3 ~$ d6 n7 q
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in ! _3 {; x: \- s8 _: w7 c3 n& W+ ~
America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the   D1 V; N7 z- O" z, I4 B
times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that 6 W1 A8 V  I6 R* M2 \8 g2 [
American creed: Yes we can.0 O. e+ ?# ^# O8 z4 o& y7 K9 A

0 c% K* o- o: H" WAt a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she ! D) @% U& i/ M+ g# j2 c) O, P
lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we
5 C+ ~  `" d$ [7 ]1 R5 R# vcan.
1 A' ~' `& F- v5 R+ ^: |2 \5 ^3 [; d- F
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she ( `+ t/ A3 B4 B, X" a% h
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of
0 Y: q; S/ H; A  ^4 pcommon purpose. Yes we can.
9 D8 o8 d7 [% A8 M. m& T
3 B- t5 ?% g3 K) ~4 FWhen the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was
0 o$ ?8 n$ |- V3 s+ p- J" S# Qthere to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved.
1 c+ a% a/ D( W) J4 uYes we can.6 J* A! z5 v% E
, w. F. a5 v( v1 Z2 {$ b
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
) c! e/ u, ~) ^+ \; f4 S% D6 Vbridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We 2 J. I* V" p: j
Shall Overcome." Yes we can.
6 }" K. J$ I( T. j2 E) V$ L! P( d1 N6 @
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was - X) T' K3 T0 w+ L8 H! o7 B
connected by our own science and imagination.- @: P" A" x) r; H) B9 v4 T( D

1 U7 y% d  R% f3 ^3 f5 C3 q: h) O  cAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and + P) S4 Q! M5 z  e
cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of / {/ D: l6 |7 ^4 E8 f1 c/ i
times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
* n) V! ]# ^. \! ?, L' y& ]
$ [$ L+ q! H/ \# k. C% lYes we can.$ Q. o& ?" q' R6 c6 K' v
( O6 Z$ z$ K3 o% C
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
, s2 ~& U4 x+ i1 m( ~5 w( Amore to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live
. j0 X) I. ?/ yto see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long ( E* ^5 w7 D& C
as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have
, R* O  Y. _& F/ z3 o1 p3 \# ~made?
* F$ j9 n1 e$ K/ A; e# d8 E, }6 O6 q/ y
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of
/ N7 l2 Z8 N$ d' z( kopportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of

! N2 Z* n" K1 i* l. z/ Care met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we 4 q# x1 ?8 }% S1 f8 a! e2 b
will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:
